Miniature Painting 101

Miniature painting can be defined in terms of the size and proportion of the subject to the actual object or the technique used. The art started in the West when the manuscript illumination took place. The paintings are about the saints and angles. It also has scenes of daily life of middle ages included in this category.

With the printing press invention, artists who used to work on manuscripts started painting miniature and other art work for royal family members or private customers. They used to keep these pieces of art in their pocket just the same way as the picture of a loved one is kept in the pocket.

Delicate skills and techniques are employed in the miniature paintings. The material and surfaces used for the paintings are several but the basic technique is the composition and use of colors.

There is no standard size of a miniature painting. Some prefer 5×7″ or smaller size. Other professionals use 11×14″ size. For some, the frame is also included in this standard and still others exclude the frame of the painting form these sizes.

For some artists, the size doesn’t matter at all. The only thing that matter to them in the miniature painting is the expertise or skill used in the painting. This allows for having a wall size painting of an object which is very smaller than the actual size of the real object.

The miniature paintings have got popular on a number of accounts. The small size is one factor that makes them ideal for display on walls or in small offices. Some people prefer to have a collection of miniature paintings to decorate a large place instead of having a large full size single image.

The price of miniature is another factor that adds to its popularity. The large paintings are usually costly and not affordable for many. Those who really are in love with paintings can buy these miniatures and appreciate their individuality without heavy investment.

Picasso Honored on One of World’s Largest Coins

The rectangular-shaped Picasso coin has a €500 face value and weighs in at a hefty 1 kilogram of .999 fine silver. It features a portrait, signature and paint brushes on one side, with an engraving of his first Vallauris poster, produced in 1948, on the reverse. Only 500 coins will be produced in gem proof quality-each individually numbered on the edge by the venerable Paris Mint. With an official issue price of 1,350 euros. The Picasso commemorative is the latest issue in the Paris Mint’s Great Painters series.

The 1948 poster was the first of many that Picasso did for exhibitions of the Vallauris Potters Association. He often used rust coloring in these posters to evoke the texture and color of the famous clays of the region–as he did for this whimsical bull design. These posters helped launch Picasso as a successful poster artist.

Since the days of ancient Rome, the Riviera town Vallauris, near Cannes in the south of France, has been known for its fine clay and pottery. In 1946, Picasso attended an exhibition of pottery making in Vallauris. After observing their potters at work, Picasso sat at a borrowed bench, and enthusiastically created his first ceramic figures. The infinite creative possibilities of ceramics that combined drawing, painting and sculpture so excited Picasso that he returned the next summer with sketches for new pieces, the first of many he was to create over the next 27 years.

10 Ways to Recognize Your Customer’s Birthdays?

This is a follow-up (or expansion) of a post I did a while back.

I got a birthday card last month (December is my birthday month and you didn’t even send me and email. We’ll discuss this another time.) from my dentist, a local Mexican restaurant I really like, Borders and a few other businesses. It got me thinking about what we do (or don’t do) for our customers, especially the young ones.

During camp we recognize camper’s birthdays with a special bead and by singing to them. And…that’s it. We do nothing else any other time of the year for any of the other customers that we have in our programs. Yikes! What a missed opportunity.

I started brainstorming what we could do for them. Here’s what I came up with. (Let me know what you do or what ideas you might have.)

  1. Send a birthday card. (duh!)
  2. Get the youth staff together and call the birthday boy or girl on speaker phone.
  3. Record a video with the staff sending a personalized birthday message. Email the video.
  4. For VIPs send a gift.
  5. Send a card with a coupon for your next event.
  6. Send a birthday shirt.
  7. Wish them Happy Birthday on your website.
  8. Send the birthday boy or girl a card with a small gift. (Dollar Store here I come)
  9. Hold a quarterly birthday party and invite customers that have had a birthday over the past three months. It would be a large special event with family and friends of all the birthday people.
  10. Create a Jib Jab birthday video (starring your staff) that you can send out.
  11. Get a prize wheel and have customers spin the “birthday wheel” for a birthday prize. Customers have to come into your office on their birthday to spin the wheel. When they come in everyone in the office should give the birthday person a standing ovation and gather around the prize wheel to watch.
